Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums (TWAM) is a large and successful archive and museums service which receives 1.3m visits per annum to the nine venues which it manages on behalf of four local authorities (Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside and South Tyneside) and Newcastle University. TWAM has a strong reputation for innovative thinking and for the quality of access, inclusion and learning work. TWAM is increasingly recognised for its entrepreneurial approach. TWAM has a wide network of local, regional, national and international partnerships across the educational, community, business and cultural sectors. TWAM also manages a ‘county’ Archive for Tyne and Wear.
On behalf of Arts Council England, TWAM also manages the regional Museum Development Programme and Culture Bridge North East – the regional cultural development agency for work with children and young people.
TWAM’s Mission is to help people determine their place in the world and define their identities, so enhancing their self respect and their respect for others.

ITP Involvement
TWAM has been involved in the ITP since its inception. We greatly enjoy sharing our experiences with colleagues from across the world, and benefit from the fellows’ experience and perspectives on their work, believing it is always useful to see one’s own organisation through fresh eyes!
Continued Dialogue
TWAM has reconnected with ITP fellows through attending the conference Toward a global network in Cairo, Egypt in 2010 and the MA Conference, held in Manchester in 2017.
