The Whitworth Art Gallery was founded in 1889 as the first English gallery in a park. The art gallery is a part of the University of Manchester and continues to display it’s collection both in the newly developed indoor gallery space and in the neighboring art garden. The Whitworth is home to 60,000 pieces including historic fine art, modern and contemporary art, sculpture, textiles and wallpapers. As a university gallery The Whitworth is committed to contributing toward research projects and with recent funding has increased the accessibility of the collection, both digitally and physically, and added a Study Centre for interested visitors.
The Whitworth is the winner of Visit England’s gold prize for Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2016 and of the Art Fund’s Museum of the Year 2015.
The Whitworth joined the ITP in 2008 with Manchester Museum, and with the support of Manchester Art Gallery have hosted up to 4 international fellows each year on their UK Partner Placement.
The Whitworth has reconnected with ITP fellows through attending the conference Toward a global network in Cairo, Egypt in 2010 and the MA Conference, held in Manchester in 2017.
