The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World opens today!

The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World opens today at the British Museum.

Many of our ITP alumni will have seen and heard about the plans for these 2 new galleries during the ITP summer programmes and  finally the opening day is here.

The galleries mark a major re-display of the British Museum’s Islamic collection which will highlight the global connections across a vast region of the world from West Africa to Southeast Asia and reflect links between the ancient and medieval as well as the modern worlds.  The new gallery will feature objects that give an overview of cultural exchange in an area stretching from Nigeria to Indonesia and from the 7th century to the present day. From cooking pots to golden vessels, and from 20th-century dress to contemporary art, the objects displayed will demonstrate the extraordinary richness of global encounters.

We are looking forward to showing the new galleries to our 2019 ITP fellows – and sharing more information and pictures with our alumni in due course.

And we hope you’ll join us sending our congratulations to the Albukhary Foundation and the team at the British Museum for this wonderful new gallery which have been described in the press as both ‘stunning’ and ‘a soaring miracle of art’.
