An exciting week of new beginnings and unforgettable experiences (Chantal Umuhoza, Rwanda, ITP Senior Fellow 2025)

It has been an incredible week since the fellows arrived! I was genuinely excited to welcome them to Schafer House last weekend, and it’s been a joy to watch how quickly they settled in.
One of the highlights of the week was undoubtedly the series of presentations delivered by the fellows. Each presentation was more impressive than the last—showcasing their diverse skills, creative ideas, and deep passion for their work. During the networking lunch, the room was filled with lively discussions, insightful questions, and a collective sense of excitement about the potential these ideas hold. I am really happy that I met such a talented group, and I can’t wait to see how their ideas evolve over the coming weeks and how this incredible journey of exchange and collaboration continues.
I had a chance to visit the Rwanda High Commission in the middle of the week. Stepping inside felt like entering a mini-Rwanda; it was a nice experience.

On Thursday, Fernando, Daniel, Julian and I spent the day at the Santo Domingo Centre of Excellence for Latin American Research (SCDCELAR), a centre dedicated to developing and supporting collection-based projects across Latin America and the Caribbean. Learning how more voices from diverse communities are being amplified through their work, along with touring the AOA exhibitions from a curator’s perspective, gave me a profound appreciation for the power of inclusive storytelling and the importance of cultural preservation.
One of the most memorable moments was my first visit to Stonehenge, because we didn’t visit it back in 2018 when I first attended the ITP. Exploring the site with the fellows made the experience even more special. We took plenty of photos, shared stories, and reflected on the incredible history that surrounds us. It was a perfect break from our busy schedules and a reminder of the importance of appreciating both the past and the present.

Overall, the week went exceptionally well. From the warm welcomes and inspiring presentations to the awe-inspiring trip to Stonehenge, I feel a renewed sense of excitement and optimism and I look forward to what lies ahead, knowing that we’re surrounded by talented, passionate people who are ready to make a difference.
