Egypt's Capitals Museum

Deputy Director of Technical Affairs

Country: Egypt

ITP Year: 2025

Biography

Shimaa joined the Egypt’s Capitals Museum team in 2020 as a Curator and was appointed Deputy Director of Technical Affairs in 2021. The Museum is one of the latest projects from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and is nearly complete, with only final touches remaining, soon to be open to the public. Shimaa has a wide range of responsibilities across the museum including facilities, security and building maintenance; collection documentation; and exhibition development and design.

Currently, Shimaa is developing a proposed strategic plan for the museum’s education department, outlining its programmes and resource requirements. She also leads the coordination process of three heritage documentation projects in partnership with the Centre of Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) which aims to enhance visitor experience and is currently working on a comprehensive documentation and registration of the museum’s collection and the development of a streamlined collection database.

Alongside her work, Shimaa is interested in museum education, and is completing her master’s in Museums and Archaeological Sites Management. Her research is in the educational role of private collection museums, using Al-Salam School Museum – a museum located within a school – as a case study. Through her research, she hopes to create a programme of education activities for the museum, to encourage engagement from young audiences.

At the British Museum
During her time at the British Museum, Shimaa was based in the Egypt and Sudan Department and her UK partner placement was spent at Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Museum and Whitworth Art Gallery.

Shimaa’s participation in the International Training Programme was generously supported by an anonymous donor.
