Hiba Assi

Biography

As the curator of the Prehistoric Department, Hiba is responsible for a diverse collection of artefacts dating from the Palaeolithic to the Chalcolithic periods. Hiba documents, photographs and archives artefacts from excavation missions – officially registering the items before storing them in a suitable environment.

Hiba has a strong professional interest in prehistoric archaeology and the preservation of cultural heritage. She is also dedicated to developing museum display methods that engage viewers with ancient objects – whether in permanent or temporary exhibitions. Hiba’s work includes conserving, documenting, photographing, and archiving artefacts within the museum’s records. Hiba is actively working towards transforming the museum into a digital museum to ensure better protection of the collection and to make the Prehistoric Museum accessible to a wider audience.

Hiba holds a PhD about decorative formations (representations and engravings) on Neolithic from the Levant.

Hiba has participated in numerous archaeological excavations with Syrian and international missions at several prehistoric sites across Syria. She has also taken part in many scientific conferences in different countries on topics related to prehistory, as well as specialised training courses, including flint illustration and traceology at the CNRS in France.

At the British Museum

During her time on the International Training Programme, Hiba was based in the Middle East Department. Her UK Partner Placement was spent at Lincoln Museum and University of Nottingham Museum.
