Directorate of Museums, Government of Assam

The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums split in June 1983 to form two separate directorates. To this day the Directorate of Museums, Assam collects and preserves antiquities and cultural heritage of the people of Assam and the region and organises seminars, exhibitions and talks to raise awareness about history and culture.

The Directorate works to develop the Assam State Museum offering and shares expertise with NGO’s, private museums and Satra Museums of Assam in the field of conservation & preservation. The directorate encourages district museums and sub-divisional museums to collect local objects and promote the learning of local history and rural life in India.
