Egypt’s Capitals Museum
Egypt’s Capitals Museum (ECM) is located in the City of Arts and Culture in the New Administrative Capital.
The museum is designed to shed light on the most important Egyptian capitals, starting from Memphis; the first capital in the Pharaonic era, to the New Administrative Capital. This is done by displaying different archaeological pieces that date back to different historical eras, thus emphasizing the role of heritage in preserving Egypt’s leadership in the field of governance and administration.
The scenario of display relies on showing the administrative structure of the Egyptian State, along with highlighting its urban development and putting emphasis on the religious, worldly and service architecture and the social and economic life of each capital. It also tackles the idea of funeral rites and the journey of resurrection of ancient Egyptians, which are displayed in a separate hall attached to the main museum building.
The museum narrates the history of the Egyptian capitals, starting with Memphis, then Thebes, and Tell El Amarna, through Alexandria during the Greek and Roman eras, all the way to the city of Fustat, Fatimid Cairo and Khedivial Cairo, in a way that gives an overall picture of the shape and development of the Egyptian capitals through various historical eras.
