Government Museum Chennai

The proposal for a Museum in Chennai was shared by the Madras Literary Society in 1846; Sir Henry Pottinger, then Governor, obtained the sanction of the Court of Directors of the East India Company in London. The Museum opened not long after and celebrated its Centenary on November 27, 1951. Today the museum is a multi-purpose State Government Museum located in Egmore, in the heart of the city, and occupies an area of 16.25 acres. The museum includes Archaeology, Numismatics, Art, Anthropology, Geology, Botany, Zoology based collections and has a Children’s Museum. (Government Museum Chennai)
