Ahmed Mohamed Hemida

Biography

As Head of the Museums Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Mohamed Hemida provides strategic leadership for Egypt’s network of archaeological museums across the country’s governorates. He is responsible for shaping and implementing museum policies, overseeing the management and development of the Museums Sector, and advancing museum practices through exhibition development, collections interpretation, public engagement and professional capacity-building. In his current role, Ahmed plays a pivotal role in strengthening cooperation at both the national and international levels, leading initiatives that foster partnerships with museums, universities and cultural institutions, promote professional exchange, and support collaborative projects that enhance the preservation and presentation of Egypt’s archaeological heritage.

Ahmed also supervises the Loans Exhibitions Committee, where he oversees the planning and implementation of Egypt’s international archaeological exhibitions. Working closely with leading museums and cultural institutions worldwide, he contributes to the development of international partnerships, oversees the loan of archaeological collections, and supports major travelling exhibitions that showcase Egypt’s rich cultural heritage to global audiences while reinforcing international museum collaboration.

In addition, Ahmed is a member of the Supreme Committee for Museum Exhibition Scenarios, contributing to the development and review of permanent exhibition narratives and interpretive strategies for archaeological museums throughout Egypt, ensuring that museum displays reflect the highest professional and scholarly standards.

Prior to his current position, Ahmed served as Head of the Central Administration for Regional Museums, overseeing the management, development and strategic advancement of Egypt’s regional archaeological museums before assuming leadership of the Museums Sector.

Earlier in his career, he served as General Director of the Akhenaten Museum in Minya, where he played a key leadership role in guiding one of Egypt’s most significant museum projects through its stages of preparations and development.

Throughout his career, Ahmed has held several key leadership positions within the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. He supervised the completion and opening of Sohag National Museum, oversaw the museums of Upper Egypt, and served as a member of the UNESCO committee responsible for the rehabilitation and redevelopment of Mallawi Museum.

At the British Museum

During the International Training Programme in 2016, Ahmed was based in the Department of Egypt and Sudan. His UK Partner Museums were Lincoln Museum and Nottingham University Museum. 

As part of the programme, participants developed proposals for an Asahi Shimbun Display—a temporary exhibition in Room 3 at the British Museum—centred on a single spotlight object. Ahmed’s exhibition proposal, Hunting for Eternity, reflected his long-standing interest in museum interpretation, exhibition development and innovative storytelling.
