Biography

Xiangwei Meng is a Research Assistant working at the China Numismatic Museum in Beijing. His research background is in ancient Chinese coins including casting and mint technology, and the relationship between coin production and dynastic regimes.

His current work involves collecting, sorting and categorising coins with the Collections Department. In the future, Xiangwei hopes to develop innovative display ideas and to work on advanced collection management. Following his experience on the ITP, Meng has promoted international communication between institutions abroad and the Chinese Numismatic Museum, and interest in ancient Chinese numismatics.

At the British Museum
During his time on the International Training Programme in 2016, Xiangwei was based in the Department of Coins and Medals, and his UK Partner placement was with Glasgow Museums.

In 2016, participants were asked to develop a proposal for an Asahi Shimbun Display – a temporary exhibition in Room 3 at the British Museum – based around a single ‘spotlight’ object.  Xiangwei’s exhibition project proposal was entitled The Art of Fire and Metal: Coin Casting Technology in ancient China.

Xiangwei’s place on the International Training Programme was generously supported by the Sino-British Fellowship Trust.
