A busy 10 days at Glasgow Museums

The British Museum delegation were met in Glasgow Central Station on the 6^th of July and were promptly whisked off to their Halls of Residence at the University of Glasgow. After getting their keys and leaving their luggage Philip Tonner took them down to Byres Road in the heart of Glasgow’s West End for a late lunch in a traditional Scottish restaurant. During lunch Philip outlined the programme of events that they would be following during their visit to Glasgow Museums. Amongst the events that Layla and Abdulmecit would attend during their visit to Glasgow Museums was a tour of Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, the new state of the art storage facility that was built as part of the larger Kelvingrove New Century Project.

There was also an interactive tour of Kelvingrove Museum and the Centre for the New Enlightenment; an interactive introduction to Glasgow Museums new online Collections Navigator; demonstrations of the tools of the trade by Collections Management and Conservation staff and an introduction to Glasgow Museums Learning and Access programme and our ‘Open Museum’. On their last day delegates visited The Burrell Collection. Here they had the opportunity to observe staff at work on our major Tapestries of Sir William Burrell research and cataloguing project.

 The feedback from staff at Glasgow Museums was very positive. Everyone at this end enjoyed meeting Layla and Abdulmecit and relished the opportunity to share ideas about the best practice in Museums.
