Egyptian Museum’s Scientific Office: Pioneering Excellence in Egyptology

Written by Shreen Mohamed Amin, Egyptian Museum Cairo (Egypt, ITP 2016)

The Egyptian Museum proudly established its Scientific Office, with the primary goal of overseeing all publication and scientific endeavors within the museum. This initiative, led by the visionary efforts of Prof. Dr. Ali Abdelhaliem, the General Director of the Egyptian Museum has greatly enhanced the museum’s research and academic output. I am honored to share that I have been promoted by the director to manage this significant office, in addition to my existing responsibilities at the museum.

The Scientific Office of the Egyptian Museum has made remarkable strides in advancing its mission. Among its notable achievements, the completion of the 2024 Annual Newsletter stands out as a testament to the museum’s commitment to transparency and global knowledge-sharing. This comprehensive publication captures a year’s worth of groundbreaking discoveries, events, and research, showcasing the museum’s dedication to excellence. The final version will soon be accessible via the link: https://egyptianmuseumcairo.eg/ . In addition, the office is actively working on a comprehensive upgrade of the museum’s labels, adhering to the rigorous standards set by the EU Transforming Egyptian Museum Project and the interpretation guidelines of the British Museum. These efforts aim to enrich the visitor experience by providing accurate, informative, and engaging details about the artifacts on display, ensuring the museum continues to be a beacon of cultural education and innovation.

With over a decade of experience in education, I continue to collaborate with international organizations in Egypt to prepare scientific materials for special education programs. These initiatives ensure that specialized information is accessible and educationally inclusive.

One of our recent accomplishments was the successful organization of the Mummification Workshop, held in conjunction with the Egyptian-Swiss Symposium on Mummy Studies, celebrating 30 years of academic collaboration as part of the Swiss Mummy Project. The event took place on Thursday, 13 February 2025, at 5:00 p.m., at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The workshop explored the wonders of ancient mummification and served as a testament to decades of fruitful collaboration. A special thank you to Dr. Rania Ahmed Ali Director of the Administration of Mummies and Human Remains Conservation, Project Sector, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities – Egypt, for her invaluable contributions, particularly her hands-on activities that enriched the workshop experience. This event marked a great achievement in mummy studies and highlighted the museum’s commitment to advancing scientific research.

It was an honor for the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and its Scientific office to actively participate in the second national dialogue on “AI and Culture,” hosted by UNESCO Cairo Office and the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT). This discussion underscores the Egyptian Museum’s commitment to cultural preservation and digital innovation, aligning with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ digital transformation strategy and Egypt’s National Strategy on AI (2025-2030) View the publication HERE.

Key priorities in this collaborative effort include leveraging artificial intelligence to:
