To mark important milestones, the International Training Programme has held international conferences to bring together its global network. These conferences have served as opportunities to unite past participants from different year groups, staff from the British Museum, programme partners around the UK and colleagues even wider.

Since 2006 the ITP has organised two international conferences in Cairo (2010) and Mumbai (2015). The reports from both conferences can be found on this page.

ITP are planning another conference to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Regular updates about the conference, its location, date, theme and how ITP fellows can be involved will be shared below.

ITP Anniversary Conference

To celebrate ITP’s 20th anniversary, we will be organising an international conference and workshop. The event will take place over three days – two days for the conference and one day for the workshop.

The theme of the conference will focus on the role museums play in global engagement and cultural diplomacy. How international, national and local networks can support sectors develop, share their knowledge and bridge geographical and cultural boundaries.

The date and location of the anniversary conference are to be confirmed. Updates will be shared on this page in due course.

Creating museums of world stories (Mumbai, 2015)

To mark ten years of the ITP, the British Museum, in collaboration with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) Museum in India, devised and delivered a workshop hosted by CSMVS in Mumbai entitled Creating museums of world stories. The aim of the workshop was to build on and deepen relationships between past participants, and to broaden the educational initiatives around encyclopaedic museums beyond Europe and North America.

The workshop aimed to provide an opportunity for past ITP participants to reconnect with the alumni from across the Programme’s ten previous years, and also provided a forum for colleagues to network with museum and heritage professionals from around India and the rest of the world. The Museum held an open application process and selected a group of 45 past ITP participants from 15 countries to attend the workshop.

Additional delegates included British Museum staff and Trustees alongside representatives from UK partner museum associated with the ITP.

Towards a global network? Outcomes and legacy of the International Training Programme (Cairo, 2010)

To mark the fifth year of the International Training Programme, a seminar was hosted in Cairo, bringing together past participants to share thoughts on how the programme has shaped or inspired their work and research in the following years.

52 past participants attended attended the conference, where each gave a presentation focusing on what they had gained from attending the ITP and what they had been doing since.

In addition to two morning sessions of presentations, guided visits were made to the Egyptian Museum, the Coptic Museum, the Textile Museum and Sharia al-Muiz quarter, the Giza Pyramids and the Citadel.
